Cooks & Books
Older kids and teens often enjoy Cupcake Wars, Meatball Wars, making Pasta, etc.

There are many books in local Town Libraries that reference food or have a food in the title, so the sky is the limit. If the Library Activities Director has a particular book or theme they would like to follow, I can come up with a recipe to go with it.

Who is it for?
Classes have been developed for kids ages 3 to 18 and work best when Classes do not exceed 20 participants.I also teach Parent/Child and Special Needs Classes so whomever your target audience is, I have or can make a customized plan.

What is the cost?
$400 for a 1 to 1.5 hour class for up to 20 kids.

Rather than charging traveling costs I would rather work with you to contact another local Library and book another class the same day in your area (within 15 miles). This helps you keep the cost down and helps me work with more Libraries. Even with the best of efforts this is not always possible, so we can discuss each individual situation.

What I need:
  • Ideally, 4 tables set up in a square with a 5th table in the middle for ingredients works best, but other configurations can be successful as well
  • Access to electricity (I provide an extension cord)
  • Access to a sink (does not have to be in same room)
  • If the class is for kids younger than 10 years old, I often request 3 to 4 teen or adult helpers to work with each Team
  • Pre class knowledge of any food allergies. (I can work with most food allergies but just need a heads up before the class.)

Extras
  • I Recycle and Reuse most of my supplies and create very little waste
  • Teams utilize their math skills to divide the ingredients in the recipes and everyone gets a turn measuring
  • I hold competitions between Teams to see which Team can keep their work area the cleanest
  • Since the Teams share ingredients, I teach the participants to be respectful and return the ingredients to the Ingredient Table when they are finished

This Program is a cooperative effort between Kidz Cooking and greater Boston area Libraries intended to spread the importance of Reading, Healthy Eating, Eating Locally Grown Foods, and Cooking From Scratch.

I also offer classes all over Massachusetts and beyond… not just greater Boston.

In an hour or an hour and a half class, I will read the kids a book and work with them to follow a recipe that can be associated with the book. Participants are divided into 2 to 4 Teams and each Team receives a recipe. The children do all the work! Depending on the recipe, I will either read the book in the beginning of the Class or read the book while the food is baking, cooking, etc. I provide all ingredients and equipment (portable convection ovens, burners, mixers, griddles, etc.) and I do the clean-up at the end. Cooks & Books can be customized to fit your needs and space.

For older kids and teens I often read excerpts from books on their level, have them read the cookbooks themselves and challenge them to find the answers to their or my own cooking questions in the cookbook itself.
